Frequently Asked Questions

Visiting Us
-
Do I need an appointment, or can I walk in?
An appointment is best. It means one of our specialists is set aside for you and can take real time with your piece instead of fitting it between other clients. We do our best to help walk-ins, but appointments come first. You can book online in about a minute.
Saturday is our busiest day. If you are planning to come in on a Saturday, please book ahead so we can be sure someone is free to sit down with you.
-
What are your hours?
Tuesday through Friday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Saturday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. We are closed Sunday and Monday.
If you are dropping off or picking up a piece, please come at least 30 minutes before we close. We start putting jewelry away before closing time.
-
Where are you located?
888 Brannan Street, Suite 129, San Francisco, CA 94103. We are inside the GiftCenter & JewelryMart, right by the Airbnb headquarters.
The building asks everyone to show a valid state-issued photo ID at the front desk, so please bring one with you.
-
I do not live in the Bay Area. Can we still work together?
Yes. We work with clients across the country. We can set up a video call, send you photos and videos of stones, and ship insured both ways. Plenty of our long-time clients have moved away and still send their pieces back to us.
Repairs and Service
-
Do you resize rings?
Yes, in house. Bring the ring in and we will check the current fit, look at the setting, and quote the work before we touch anything.
Price depends on the metal, how many sizes you are going up or down, and the design. Gold is priced by weight and the market moves, so we quote at current prices rather than from a fixed list.
-
Can you clean and inspect my jewelry?
Yes, and we recommend it once or twice a year. We check the prongs and setting first, then clean and polish. If we find something loose or worn, we tell you before we do any additional work.
We ask that you book an appointment so one of our associates can dedicate the time to inspect your jewelry carefully before cleaning it.
-
A stone fell out of my ring. Can you replace it?
Yes. Send us a clear photo taken from the top in good light and we can give you a rough estimate by email. Small accent diamonds are usually an inexpensive fix. Setting labor is quoted separately once we see the piece in person, and larger or colored stones are always quoted individually.
-
How long do repairs take?
It depends on the work. Simple cleaning, polishing, and sizing are usually a few days. Anything involving stone setting or rebuilding takes longer, and we will give you a date when you drop it off.
-
Do you service jewelry you did not make?
Yes. We work on pieces from other jewelers all the time. We will look at it first and be honest with you about whether the repair makes sense.
-
How should I care for my jewelry?
To keep your jewelry looking its best:
- Remove jewelry before swimming, cleaning, or exercising
- Store pieces separately to prevent scratching
- Clean gently with a soft brush and mild soap solution
- Have your jewelry professionally inspected and cleaned annually
We offer complimentary cleaning for pieces purchased from Giraux.
-
Do you offer warranties on your jewelry?
All Giraux jewelry comes with our commitment to quality craftsmanship. We stand behind our work and offer repair services for any manufacturing defects. We recommend having your jewelry inspected annually to ensure settings remain secure and stones are properly seated.
Custom Design
-
Do you make custom pieces?
Yes. It is what we have done since 1977. Every piece is designed and finished here in San Francisco.
We start with a conversation about what you have in mind, then work through stones, settings, and design together.
-
Can you use my own stones or a family heirloom?
Yes, and we do this often. Bring the piece in and we will look at the stones, tell you what we think they are worth, and walk you through your options. Some clients use every stone from an old piece, some use just the center.
Price and timeline depend on the stones and the design you land on.
-
How long does a custom piece take?
Most custom rings take three to four weeks. More involved designs run four to six. If we happen to have a setting that fits your stone perfectly, we can sometimes finish the same day. The style you choose drives the timeline more than anything else.
-
How much does a custom ring cost?
It depends entirely on the stone and the design, so we do not publish a range. Tell us your budget and what you like, and we will build to it honestly. Most clients come in with a number in mind and we work from there.
Diamonds and Gemstones
-
Do you sell lab-grown diamonds?
No. We work with natural diamonds and natural gemstones only.
-
Are your diamonds certified?
Our diamonds are GIA certified. We are happy to send you the report number and a copy of the report before you buy anything.
-
Can you find a specific diamond for me?
Yes. Send us what you are looking for and we will search. The more you give us the better: shape, carat range, color, clarity, cut, ratio, and your budget. We will come back with what is available and what we think of each stone.
-
Can I bring my partner in to look at stones together?
Absolutely, and a lot of people do. Just let us know when you book so we set aside enough time.
-
What types of gemstones do you carry?
We offer a beautiful selection of natural color gemstones and fancy color diamonds. Our collection includes sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and many other precious stones. All our gemstones are carefully selected for quality and beauty.
Appraisals and Valuations
-
Do you do appraisals?
Yes. We appraise for insurance and for estate purposes.
-
Can you update an appraisal you wrote years ago?
Yes. If the piece was purchased from us, we can usually update the existing appraisal from our records and current photos, without you bringing it in. That is helpful for clients who have moved away.
If the piece or the center stone did not come from us, we need to see it in person before we can put a value on it.
-
What do you need from me for an appraisal update?
Clear photos of the piece, including a straight-on view from the top in good light, and the name the original purchase might be under. We will pull the rest from our records.
Past Purchases
-
I bought a ring from you years ago. Can you find my record?
Very likely, yes. Our records go back decades. Send us the name the purchase might be under, which is sometimes a spouse, a parent, or a maiden name, and roughly when it was bought. We can usually find the original order.
-
Can I order a matching band for a ring I bought from you?
Often, yes. If we made the original, we can usually remake it or make something that sits with it properly. Send photos of the ring on your hand and anything you still have from the original purchase, and we will tell you what is possible.
Buying, Selling, and Availability
-
Do you have pieces I can buy today, or is everything made to order?
Both. We have a showroom full of finished pieces and a catalog online, and we build custom pieces to order.
-
Do you carry unusual ring sizes?
Talk to us. Many of our bands can be made in larger or smaller sizes than what is listed. Made-to-order sizes take longer than something we have on hand, so give us as much notice as you can.
-
Do you buy jewelry or accept trade-ins?
We look at trade-ins case by case, usually toward a new piece. Send us photos and any certificates or appraisals you have and we will tell you where we land.
-
Do you ship nationwide?
Yes, we ship throughout the United States. All shipments are fully insured and require signature upon delivery. For high-value items, we use secure shipping methods to ensure your purchase arrives safely.
-
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), wire transfers, and certified checks. For larger purchases, we can discuss payment arrangements that work for your situation.
-
What is your return policy?
We want you to be completely satisfied with your purchase. Items may be returned within 14 days of purchase in their original condition with all documentation. Custom-designed pieces and special orders are final sale. Please contact us for specific return instructions.
