Carat is the standard unit of weight for gemstones, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams. Because different gemstones have different densities, two stones of the same carat weight may appear different sizes.

For example, a one-carat sapphire will appear smaller than a one-carat diamond because sapphires are denser. What matters is how the stone appears when set in jewelry.
