Garnets are a diverse group of gemstones occurring in virtually every color. Known for their excellent brilliance and good hardness (6.5-7.5 on Mohs scale), garnets have been used in jewelry for thousands of years.

Color is the most important quality factor for colored gemstones. It's evaluated based on three components: hue (the basic color), saturation (the intensity of the color), and tone (lightness or darkness).

The most valuable gemstones display vivid, saturated colors that are neither too light nor too dark, allowing the stone's natural beauty to shine through.

Carat is the standard unit of weight for gemstones, with one carat equaling 200 milligrams. Because different gemstones have different densities, two stones of the same carat weight may appear different sizes.

For example, a one-carat sapphire will appear smaller than a one-carat diamond because sapphires are denser. What matters is how the stone appears when set in jewelry.
